The Item every wardrobe needs

The utility or military if you like, jacket has become something of a staple, like the denim jacket. It goes over everything, from a t-shirt to a formal frock.  Its slightly more versatile than the denim jacket however, in that the longer length and softer fabric (in some) allows you to play around with the style a lot more.  Wearing a belt around the middle can dress it up over a cocktail dress, or if it’s more of a Shacket (shirt/jacket for those of you not up to speed with fashion jargon ;)) then the fabric is usually a softer tencel which allows you to even tuck it in as a shirt, wear it open loosely with sleeves rolled up or tied around your waist.

Here are some of the best ones out there.

This is your really good box standard Utility Jacket, it has an inner drawstring for creating a waistline, softer fabric, and all buttons covered. Super jacket to throw over anything, shop here

A camo jacket has the same effect and does pretty much the same just a little bit more out there, great for mixing up prints and livening up staples. Shop here

This one s referred to as a parka by the retailer however aside from the outer cord drawstring to me it’s more of a utility jacket than a parka.  The adjustable cord showing on the outside  gives it more of a casual feel and limits the styling of this jacket somewhat, only slightly though, but a great shape and I love the high neck and lapels. A trusted brand when it comes to quality, this fit and fabric look perfect, the length is good too for those ladies with larger hip areas as you don’t want the jacket length ending at your widest part of your hips and thighs. Shop here

We can rely on Zara to give us a bunch of trends in one jacket, from embroidery, and studs to writing and colour on this slightly more parker-esque take on a utility jacket (you will see from the back shape online), This one’s got all the bells and whistles if your’e a trend junkie

My favourite seasons

This is probably the last post I will do for a while that will benefit both my Southern and Northern Hemisphere friends.  We’re getting closer to similar temperatures (well probably still about 10 degrees difference) but a Northern Hem person pretends to feel warmer when they see the sun and a Southern Hem person gets chilly way too easily.

Spring and Autumn are my favourite seasons for dressing, the perfect temperature for all the things I love to wear.  Its cropped trouser weather (perfect 5ft3 leg length choice), Macs (another fave of mine) little cropped jackets (think boucle, denim, military style), fun shoes without sweaty feet or freezing feet (depending on where you live) pointed flats and best of all no bulky coats.  I really am NOT a fan of coats.

So how to wear all of the above.  The options are endless. Roll up the chino (hot trend) wear with anything from white sneakers to heels.  Add a collared shirt and earrings for a smarter look or a t-shirt and denim jacket for something more casual.  Wear shorts with a knitted jumper and military green jacket.  Pair an embroidered 3/4 dress with ankle boots and a Mac.  Need I say more.  Shop the season’s picks below!

Rolled up Chinos are such a hit this season and so versatile.  Wearing them with heels looks so chic as does a pair of sneakers for a dress down edge.
