The New Jean Silhouette

Well it’s hardly brand new but it’s certainly taken some time to get us creatures of habit out of our skinnies!

Some of us would have been wearing a high rise jean for some time (a skinny high rise).   But how on earth have these skinnies fill up our jean rails for the last decade + ? Not a glimmer of hope or a bat of an eyelid for any other style.  A much needed change of jean silhouette was needed, and what better way to bring the denim back to life with the best authentic, lived in real jean look that the likes of Levi’s, gave everyone back in the 70’s, a real bum, and a longer leg.  Be it cropped or full length you absolutely have to get real again and get your non stretch, hard wearing, straight leg, high waisted jean on!

Whilst sussing out some perfect pics to get you all onboard I came across two articles that I found highly entertaining and thought I would share a snippet of both.  I have to say if you read the full article by Man Repeller, she doesn’t instil much confidence as far as the comfort levels go but believe me, mine are oh so comfy, and whilst the eating factor is absolutely true, if I eat a little I find myself with this little kangaroo type pouch between my button and my “you know what”.  Regardless, Im in love!

Man Repeller wrote:

“There is nothing more enticing than the prospect of encasing my loin fruits in a suction cup of denim that fastens right below the ribcage. I pull the 11-inch zipper up slowly, relishing in the compact delight of two halves of this delicious Levi’s sandwich becoming one, circling my torso in a perfectly sized love lock. I look in the mirror. A hologram of Ryan Gosling dips a finger in the blood of my enemies and writes on the glass, “Hey girl, did you swap butts with a young Brooke Shields or are you just wearing your favorite high-waist jeans?”

Vogue Wrote:

“Rigid, 100 per cent cotton denim jeans – the original androgynous utility staple – have been overlooked during the decade-long rise of stretchy, spray-on skinnies. How did these clingy, wafer-thin, denim-ish imposters, which are not actually jeans, achieve world domination? They fed our weakest desires for a teenage sort of comfort and provided the illusion of a lean figure, instantly. Somehow it had become acceptable to wear a pair of mock-denim leggings with belt loops and fake rips at the knees outside the house for the sake of that streamlined silhouette. Impatience also played a part.”

Easing into Spring

It’s always quite strange going from winter wear to summer wear, when a boiling hot day springs itself upon us, I always feel completely unprepared, apart from having no tan, I feel like I’m walking around in my underwear when wearing a pair of shorts.  Some relaxed not so “bare” ensembles to ease you into spring.  Create a wardrobe that you can easily mix and match that won’t only make daily dressing a whole lot easier, but also packing for weekends away.  Where you see a scarf, try something new and wear it on your head like a turban à la Mira Duma sported rather frequently this summer.  As always click on links to shop direct!

New Dress Code Round Up

To say I’ve been obsessing about purchases over the last few months would be an understatement.  I’ve thought, dreamt and physically tired myself out over finding what I think I’m going to want and need living a new lifestyle in a completely different climate to the past 11 years in London.

Two things I know is, it’s casual and it’s hot! Of course there are always going to be those very few (probably not that necessary but couldn’t resist) purchases that have egged their way into the basket (managing to get hold of the inner fashion goddess spirit and the head is nowhere to be seen or heard!) But overall I’ve been wise, pulled myself together, talked some sense to the wild free spirited side of the brain and managed to refrain from the fairly left-field decisions that I sometimes like to make when it comes to dressing.  On the occasions where I haven’t managed to hold back, generally upon arriving home and rethinking my decisions I have have managed to return these so called wild idea purchases, however, sometimes with great reluctance….

I have no problem advising others what to buy but when it comes to myself I deliberate forever.

I have curated a couple of pieces and whilst this is a very small selection of my super spree, it’s a little round up of what the future dress code will look like.  These I believe are all wardrobe staples and will hopefully be with me for many years to come.  You would think I was moving to the middle of the outback the way I am banging on as if I am never going to walk into a store again, which of course is NOT the case, however I do know that South Africa is not cheap and I am going to kick myself if I find I’m needing a white linen tee, searching for weeks on end for starters to find “the one” and when finding it spending half my family’s food budget on buying the simple item.  Whereas here, I know where to get it, I know it’s not going to break the bank and I know what the quality is going to be.

As you may have gathered I am rather meticulous about fit and fabric, and will scrutinise most of what I purchase, which my poor husband has had to succumb to and bear the brunt of my ongoing explanations and reason’s of why I don’t feel that a particular item is not right.  (rolling his eyes, crying inside because he’s desperately wanting the search to be over).  Not only have I been doing this for my wardrobe, but for the boys and our home interiors….needless to say I think he is completely and utterly over shopping.  I would like to add that he has been an absolute star and great resource for sourcing certain items for us, I hold his opinion in high regard and have so enjoyed having such a big input from him in all the decisions that we have made from rugs, crockery and lighting to boys toys, and my running shoes and goodness knows what else.

It’s going to be a completely different way of dressing but I’m certainly looking forward to it; simple, comfortable and beachy with hopefully a need for a touch of elegance, cooler weather and (glamour) every now and then when I get to bring out the dusty rose faux fur, 4″ heels and crocodile leather evening bags ;-).  For now I’m so ready for sandals, shorts, and baskets.

Spring Transitions

Casual Comforts is how Im feeling right now.  The temps should be warming up later in the week, and gradually more so as April inconspicuously springs it’s pretty self upon us, but as we transition across to Spring it’s difficult to start breaking out into skirts without tights, short sleeves and god forbid we need to get those winter feet out into sandals! This outfit will keep you at the perfect temp, has the right amount of ventilation without showing any skin but still looking stylish and slightly sexy in a comfortable manner, no?! I love the flattering jeans with the wide weaved knit which has a lowish V-back. You will be hitting the ground running in the style steaks with these open sided shoes which are bang on trend, again feeling less wintery but without really putting the white feet on show completely! Grab your hand held clutch and a chunky ring and you’re looking ever so covetable.  Remember feeling comfortable is the key to looking confident and good.  It’s my pleasure!

5 Fashion Items that get better with age

Vogue recently published an article about fashion items that are made to last (view it here). It’s something I think about all the time and get asked about all the time by my clients.  Everyone out there will have a different opinion on what they would spend their money on and what items they would choose to own that would last forever.

There are so many gorgeously important items that I believe get better with age and are almost not as nice new as they are after a couple of worn years.  These are my picks on what I would invest in.

1.Goes without saying, a good quality leather handbag.  Choose a colour that works for your wardrobe and a colour that is versatile and preferably neutral, grey, tan, black.. The older the leather gets the better the bag looks and feels.

Two bags of my choice would be a tote and a smaller shoulder bag. The Balenciaga classic has always been one of my personal fave’s, the fact that I still like it after about 10 years clearly means something and the Bottega Veneta shoulder bag as below.  Both simple and classic.  A beautiful evening bag with a gold or silver chain strap would be another favourite but in terms of getting more wear, these two would win.

2. A good solid bangle, be it silver, gold, whatever metal you choose.  I had the most beautiful rounded tube like silver bangle which fitted my wrist perfectly but it had an opening and somehow it fell off my arm, I have been so upset about it and am still hunting down the perfect bangle to take it’s place. I think this time I will replace it with a rose gold one.  I like to find jewellery in unexpected places. So not your usual jewellery stores but at markets or on overseas trips.  I think it is far more romantic and gives the pieces a bit of a story.  Hence my search continues!

3. A good old pair of straight cut Levi’s. They will never ever date. I was wearing straight cut Levi’s when I was 14 and I still wear straight cut Levi’s. They go with everything, can be dressed up and down. That said find your brand and cut that works for you and invest! Other fave jean brands that work for me are J Brand, Pepe, AG and Current Elliot

4. Leather Jacket. This specific leather jacket style I love but leather jackets don’t need to be devilishly expensive and you can find amazing leather jackets in vintage stores or on the high street. I have one vintage one which I bought the first year I arrived in London and two high street jackets which look and feel a lot more expensive than they were. In fact my black one looks almost exactly like the one below.

5. The perfect soft jumper. Now this is something that sadly won’t last as long (well not for public appearances anyway) so should be replaced every couple of years but is so important to have.  The jumper should compliment you, not make you feel frumpy but at the same time you should be able to wear it any day of the week and feel not only cosy but also amazing. Jumpers should not drown your figure or be pilled.

Hopefully this will help you think again when you want to buy another cheap fashion item. Don’t get me wrong I am all for trends and buying what’s in now but maybe it’s time to invest in a few good pieces too every now and then.
