SS20 STREETSTYLE

Hello again.

It’s been forever, and I had no intention of posting until earlier today when I fancied sharing some of my takeaways from all the streetsyle photography from the various SS20 fashion weeks around Europe and NYC. I then realized I had too much to share on IG stories (which is where I was going to post it) that I thought I may as well sum it up here. This is by no means a full round up but just my identification of what was on repeat. Fashion today is such a vast term, as really, there is so much under the trend umbrella, there are so many silhouettes and fabrics being covered at once with the style influencers putting it all together with their own personal style stamp.

Some clear shoe shapes, fabrics and silhouettes shone through. For me some of the incredibly obvious ones were: square toed shoes (all shoes from sandals to boots) , kitten heels, flip flops and chunky sneakers. Mainly dresses and skirts being worn, and when it came to trousers and jeans, they were always oversized, wide leg, high waisted or straight, absolutely not a skinny pant in sight! Beautiful prints, from floral, to check, tartan and granny’s curtains to lots of monotone and tonal dressing. Floaty oversized, puffy sleeved and tier skirted dresses. Big! Leather …. lots and lots of leather. 80’s blazers, longer in length, oversized and shoulder pads (not always all rolled into one). Trench coats for days. Although I think it’s actually compulsory to wear a trench coat in September in the northern hemisphere because that’s probably the only month of the year you are able to wear it, so in order for it to not be made redundant, it must be worn. Not too many jeans around unless in the way of knee length shorts which were everywhere in all fabrics from leather to denim. Denim shirts (never really went out) but are back in a big way. Part of the western style that’s making a comeback too, western boots it is for the upcoming winter in the northern hemisphere (if not square toed or pointed kitten heel – you see what I’m talking about). I took some snaps from various sources (Popsugar and Style Dun Monde mainly) to round up the above in a visual for you. Oh and pastels too. You get it. A little bit of everything and the kitchen sink. It’s certainly awoken the fashion fire that’s been buried deep in my belly and I’m itching for a small splurge on some big trend items (even though I’m trying to be more classic and simplistic (think clean, understated and natural, thanks to my current geographical location), and of course consumerism….and the fact that if you wear anything out of the ordinary in my home town you may be eyeballed the entire day.

Enjoy the visuals.

Let’s start with the leathers as there’s lots of it.

Leather knee length shorts and THE belt of the moment
The 80’s blazer of the season in leather and note the square toe sandal

It’s Leather Weather

Something happens to me in November, I get very very excited for shiny, sparkly, leather, furry and woolly cashmere-y things.  None of this works for me in Summer, well obviously cashmere and summer don’t go hand in hand but I find leather and sparkle in summer are just too… garish.  I prefer bohemian and floatier styles then.  Perhaps its the darkness in winter which lets out the wilder side, or the fact that we can mix these showy fabrics with oversized warm cosy items to kind of counteract the OTT ones. Of course this time of year also brings Christmas and that is a big reason for getting sparkly and wearing super luxe fabrics which helps create a seriously major outfit. You can never look OTT at Christmas time…can you!?!

I have spotted a few A M A A A Z I N G pairs of ankle boots in sparkly glittery leather (hearts in my eyes) and I am definitely going to purchase a pair this winter.  Even if I only have two months remaining of it, I’m going for it!

These combo’s make me want to say “simple, yet satisfying” that is what comes to mind (yes it’s a line from the Lion King, guess who I’ve been hanging out with).

Clocks vs Cold

I was looking up the date of the clocks going forward when I came across all these suggestions of what do do with the extra hour of light (as if we need help but anyway), they were pretty lame suggestions such as go to the park, have a bbq, go for an evening walk, sit in the garden, hang your washing outside..etc etc. however, clearly when jotting down these suggestions down no consideration went into the fact that the clocks will change but the weather won’t!

So we thinking, It’s nearly April, the Clocks have changed, lets wear Spring/Summer clothes and pretend it’s all ok.  Unfortunately the temp is what we are really feeling and the fact that it’s averaged about 10 degrees over the last two weeks hardly has me reaching for my spring dresses. So if you feeling so over that winter coat but like me are ridiculously sensitive to the chilly temps, then layer up to conceal the fact that you still in winter mode. Put that padded coat in the loft (if you dare), bring out your light weight jacket, but under that layer up. Starting with a thermal camisole, then your shirt or long sleeve top of choice, then the thicker jumper (sleeves pulled up) or a cosy long cardi or a jacket which is roomy enough for all those layers then chuck on the Trench/light weigh Mac. Make sure the layers are all different lengths and visible, otherwise you may just look puffy…

5 Fashion Items that get better with age

Vogue recently published an article about fashion items that are made to last (view it here). It’s something I think about all the time and get asked about all the time by my clients.  Everyone out there will have a different opinion on what they would spend their money on and what items they would choose to own that would last forever.

There are so many gorgeously important items that I believe get better with age and are almost not as nice new as they are after a couple of worn years.  These are my picks on what I would invest in.

1.Goes without saying, a good quality leather handbag.  Choose a colour that works for your wardrobe and a colour that is versatile and preferably neutral, grey, tan, black.. The older the leather gets the better the bag looks and feels.

Two bags of my choice would be a tote and a smaller shoulder bag. The Balenciaga classic has always been one of my personal fave’s, the fact that I still like it after about 10 years clearly means something and the Bottega Veneta shoulder bag as below.  Both simple and classic.  A beautiful evening bag with a gold or silver chain strap would be another favourite but in terms of getting more wear, these two would win.

2. A good solid bangle, be it silver, gold, whatever metal you choose.  I had the most beautiful rounded tube like silver bangle which fitted my wrist perfectly but it had an opening and somehow it fell off my arm, I have been so upset about it and am still hunting down the perfect bangle to take it’s place. I think this time I will replace it with a rose gold one.  I like to find jewellery in unexpected places. So not your usual jewellery stores but at markets or on overseas trips.  I think it is far more romantic and gives the pieces a bit of a story.  Hence my search continues!

3. A good old pair of straight cut Levi’s. They will never ever date. I was wearing straight cut Levi’s when I was 14 and I still wear straight cut Levi’s. They go with everything, can be dressed up and down. That said find your brand and cut that works for you and invest! Other fave jean brands that work for me are J Brand, Pepe, AG and Current Elliot

4. Leather Jacket. This specific leather jacket style I love but leather jackets don’t need to be devilishly expensive and you can find amazing leather jackets in vintage stores or on the high street. I have one vintage one which I bought the first year I arrived in London and two high street jackets which look and feel a lot more expensive than they were. In fact my black one looks almost exactly like the one below.

5. The perfect soft jumper. Now this is something that sadly won’t last as long (well not for public appearances anyway) so should be replaced every couple of years but is so important to have.  The jumper should compliment you, not make you feel frumpy but at the same time you should be able to wear it any day of the week and feel not only cosy but also amazing. Jumpers should not drown your figure or be pilled.

Hopefully this will help you think again when you want to buy another cheap fashion item. Don’t get me wrong I am all for trends and buying what’s in now but maybe it’s time to invest in a few good pieces too every now and then.

Babydoll Dress Zara //  Satchel Topshop //  Rose Gold Textured Top Topshop //Pink pocket tee J.Crew // A line skirt Whistles  //Leather heels Kurt Geiger // Coat similar at ASOS and Reiss and my favourite style steals at Topshop and ASOS

Tips: 1) Wear the babydoll dress with a pair of converse for an edgier look.  2) Wear the Leather A line skirt with a tee, KG pink shoes and Pink Satchel Bag all together for a chic monochrome look to the office. 3) Get the daytime lustre spot on with this Rose gold Topshop top, it would look amazing with white on the bottom, whether its a pair of white jeans or white tailored trousers. 4) wear your pink coat draped over the shoulders and the satchel bag as a cross body for extra fashion points 😉
